"Someday, if I ever find another man, I want you to look inside his head and tell me everything that's in there."
―Arlene to Sookie[src]

Arlene Fowler Bellefleur is a waitress at Merlotte's and friend to Sookie Stackhouse. Married 5 times, she has 3 children, Coby, Lisa and Mikey. As of season 4, she is married to Terry Bellefleur ("She's Not There") and has taken his surname as her married name ("Me and the Devil"). Arlene is also a medium being commonly involved with spirits, seeing Rene's ghost, Zaafira, Mavis, and also the source of Mikey's mediumship.

History

Season 1

In the first season, we learn that Arlene was about to become a serial killer's bride. She was dating René Lenier who, unknown to Arlene, was the psychopath killing women that had been with vampires. She was also shown to be rather prejudiced about vampires and showed her obvious disapproval for Sookie's budding relationship with Bill. Arlene has two children, Coby and Lisa, from a previous marriage. Her ex-husband was a bit wild and eventually ran out on her.

When Arlene needed a babysitter for date night with René, she asked Sookie to babysit Lisa and Coby. Upon dropping off her children she found Bill was there too. Becoming worried about the vampire, she put silver bracelets on the children-an effort to keep them safe from a harmful Bill.

After it was discovered that René was the killer, Arlene, a hysterical mess, felt guilty and went to Sookie's side bearing flowers.

Arlene and her kids

In the first episode of season 2, Arlene was still struggling with Rene's true identity. She was upset when she heard some people gossiping about him in the bar. Terry Bellefleur came to the rescue by throwing them out and comforting her.

Arlene began a romance with Terry. It was almost ruined when the couple are both continuously put under MaryAnn Forrester's influence. After not remembering what they did during a party, Terry and Arlene were worried and didn't speak to each other. Arlene wondered if she accidentally date raped him.

By the end of Season 2, everything was back to normal and Terry even bonded with Arlene's kids.

Season 3

Hollyarlene forestceremony

Arlene with Holly during a Wiccan ritual

Arlene discovered she was pregnant. At first she was happy, but she soon discovers she had been with child for several months- causing the audience to believe she was pregnant with Rene's child. When Arlene told Terry about the pregnancy, Terry thought it was his child; which Arlene hastily confirmed. In the episode Everything is Broken, after a argument with Tommy, an upset Arlene told the new waitress Holly, that the baby was not Terry's and that she didn't want it. She told Holly that Rene was pure evil and that she didn't want to bring an evil child into the world. She was afraid that once Terry finds out, he would leave her. Holly asked Arlene if she wanted her to come to the clinic with her and Arlene said that it was wrong and that she couldn't have an abortion.

Meanwhile, Arlene had to contend with working along side Jessica, a vampire. To add insult to injury, Jessica also has red hair, causing Arlene to complain: "People love giving redheads tips! And I've always been the only redhead at Merlotte's" ("9 Crimes"). She and Jessica butted heads several times causing Jessica to glamor customers out of giving Arlene tips.

Arlene eventually confessed the child's true parentage to Terry. She also had asked him to move in ("Trouble"). Despite his support and determination to raise the child as his own, Arlene still had serious misgivings. She asked Holly, a Wiccan, for help. Holly and Arlene performed a ceremony in the woods to encourage a miscarriage, but Holly warned that it will not work if the child was destined to be born. Days later, Arlene woke in a pool of blood. Assuming she had a miscarriage, she was rushed to the hospital. However, the doctor told Arlene and Terry the baby is fine. Arlene was shocked, and Terry was ecstatic.
