It is included on his only album for Epic Records Nashville, the self-titled Jace Everett. Although released as a single in 2005, it did not chart on the "US Hot Country Songs charts" that year. The song charted in the United Kingdom, Norway, and Sweden in 2009 after it was selected as the theme song for the HBO original series True Blood. The song reached No. 2 in Norway, No. 30 in Sweden and No. 49 in UK in 2009.
Award winning author Charlaine Harris pays homage to the song by including "Bad Things" being played at Merlotte's in the 2010 Sookie Stackhouse mystery Dead in the Family, the tenth book in her The Sookie Stackhouse Novels collection.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine, in his review of the album for the website http://www.allmusic.com, compared the song in sound to songwriter Chris Isaak's "Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing", saying that it was "less menacing and a little rowdier" than that song.
