"It's go time!"
―Jason, getting his gun ready.

Jason Stackhouse is a major character in the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth seasons of True Blood. He is played by starring cast member Ryan Kwanten and debuts in "Strange Love". He is a construction worker in Bon Temps, Louisiana. He has struggled with an addictive personality including dependence on V and using sex as a substitute for emotional intimacy. He is the older brother of Sookie Stackhouse.

History

Before Season 1

YoungJason

Jason as a young boy

Jason was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stackhouse a few years earlier than his sister Sookie. When he was 11 years old both his parents died in a flash flood, so he thought, when really they were drained by vampires. After their deaths he and his sister Sookie moved in with their grandmother, Adele Stackhouse. When Jason was 18 he moved back into his childhood home, even though Adele wanted him to stay with her. Jason left high school, where he was the star quarterback, and did not go to college as he failed to earn a football scholarship. He got a job as supervisor of a road crew and became friends with René Lenier, Hoyt Fortenberry and Lafayette Reynolds. Jason earned a reputation for sleeping around with the women of Bon Temps, including Dawn Green, although he stopped calling her after he got bored with her.

Season 1

While Jason is having sex with Maudette Pickens, which is being videotaped unbeknownst to him, she suggests she likes it rough so Jason obliges and starts to choke her till she falls unconscious and won't wake up. Believing he had killed her, Jason then runs out of her apartment leaving Maudette tied up. Jason spent the next day worried and wondering when the police would come for him. ("Strange Love")

After the police found the sex tape of Jason and Maudette they showed it to him while questioning him and he admitted to killing her, believing he had choked her to death. However at the end of the tape, Maudette unties herself and laughs after Jason left her apartment, showing he didn't kill her. After spending the day believing he had killed someone and thrown his life away, Jason sought comfort with Dawn Green, his former girlfriend. ("The First Taste")

The two began seeing each other again. After Jason discovered that Dawn has had sex with a vampire, he was disgusted with her but stopped criticizing her in order to have sex. The two began to have a relationship until one night when Jason was over he couldn't get an erection. He and Dawn started to fight and Dawn threw him out of her house. Jason went to Lafayette to buy Viagra, however, Lafayette said he needed V instead because it is much more powerful. The next day Dawn was found dead by Sookie and Jason. ("Mine")

Jason was the prime suspect in the Bon Temps murders as he had just had sex with both victims before their deaths. Jason was arrested and, while in the cop car, realized he still had the illegal V on him. He panicked and drank the whole vial, even though Lafayette warned him to take no more than two drops. While in the police station Jason developed an acute erection which would not go away, a serious medical condition known as priapism. He left the interrogation room to go to the bathroom but began to panic when Andy started demanding he come out. Tara came to Jason's aid and reminded Andy that if he could not charge Jason with anything, he had no choice but to let him go. Later that night, Tara finds Jason in the walk-in cooler of Merlotte's with a frozen ribeye on his penis. Tara takes Jason to the hospital and he has the blood drained out of his penis. ("Cold Ground")

The next day Jason went to Lafayette upset with his V "experience." Lafayette advised Jason again on the dosage, then proceeds to show Jason the right way to do it. Meanwhile he is still a suspect for the murders of the local women. The same night, he attended the Descendants of the Glorious Dead meeting, being under the influence of V and confessing his love for Tara although later at Merlotte's, Tara catches him having sex outside behind the bar with a trashy customer who is celebrating her divorce. ("Sparks Fly Out")

Later that night Gran is murdered. Several attempts are made to call Jason.

The next day after arriving at work, Jason learns the news of Gran's death from Lafayette, Rene and Hoyt and rushes to Gran's home, arriving during the wake. He runs in the house, confronts Sookie and slaps her, accusing her of causing Gran's death due to her vampire relationships. Later and after the funeral, he tried to apologize for his inappropriate manners to Sookie with no results. The V addiction continues on however. ("Cold Ground")

While looking for a new place to buy V, Jason found himself in Fangtasia where he met Amy, a young, attractive V addict. The two began a relationship and for awhile were very happy, until they ran out of V and resorted to kidnapping Lafayette's V source, vampire Eddie Gauthier, for his blood ("Burning House of Love"), ("The Fourth Man in the Fire")

Jason and Amy

Jason and Amy meet at Fangtasia

Jason bonded with Eddie and they became friends. Eddie manipulated Jason into letting him go, however, Amy staked the vampire before he could kill them. ("I Don't Wanna Know") Jason was upset by Eddie's true death and told Amy that they were no longer going to do V. Amy agreed and they threw it all out, apart from enough for one more high.

During this last V trip, the real killer, Drew Marshall, AKA René Lenier, killed Amy because she was involved with vampires. Jason woke up to find her dead and thought he had killed her while on his V high, and confessed to her murder along with Maudette and Dawn. ("To Love Is to Bury") Once it was revealed that René was the real killer, Jason was let go. He was still distraught and confused by the events that had happened to him. He sought answers about his recent experiences from the Fellowship of the Sun, a vampire-hating church. ("You'll Be the Death of Me")

Season 2

Jason begins season 2 searching for a new beginning, after thinking he'd killed people in season 1. While considering a path involving the church, Fellowship of the Sun, Jason remembers his life with Amy. Imagining paths of "light" and  "darkness", Jason recalls that while his relationship with Amy brought dark times, she loved him. Jason falters in despair, contemplating his next step.

Ory, the Fellowship of the Sun representative from season 1, takes Jason to a breakfast with Steve & Sarah Newlin: the leaders of the organization. The two know of Jason from the headlines his near false-conviction for the murders, and invite him to take part in the church's leadership program. However, the program costs thoursands of dollars that he does not have. Then in a turn of events that seem destined from above, Jason receives $15,000 from Sookie, that she wants no part of. He immediately leaves Bon Temps for Dallas to join the Fellowship of the Sun, but does not disclose this news, knowing that his friends and family who approve of vampires, would never approve of his choice.

Jason's obvious good looks and athletic ability fire him up the ladder with the Fellowship of the Sun, as the Newlin's give him more and more equity. However, Jason struggles with distinguishing right from wrong. Hearing non-stop talk of how vampires are all evil, Jason recalls his past with Amy, Eddie the vampire, and his grandmother's death at the hands of Rene. But with no other view points, Jason begins to succumb to the culture of the Fellowship of the Sun. It isn't long before the Newlin's take such a liking to Jason, that they invite him to live in their house instead of the cabins for other leadership program attendees.

In Jason fashion, Jason falls into an affair with the neglected and gorgeous Sarah Newlin. Worried that the sadistic Steve Newlin will kill him, Jason attempts to leave. He is nearly killed by one of Steve's henchmen- though for other reasons.

Notable Skills & Abilities

While Jason did not inherit any powers as his sister did, he does carry the blood of his fae ancestors, which makes him more attractive to straight women and gay men. As a former football star quarterback, Jason is very athletic and keeps up his fitness through an intense workout regimen. Fearless and loyal to a fault, he will often run into dangerous situations without fully thinking them through. He is shown to be capable of handling himself in a fight and is unafraid to challenge or attack individuals with strength that dwarfs his own if someone he cares about is in danger. He has proven multiple times he is quite proficient in the use of firearms as he usually hits his intended target with uncanny accuracy. He is also quite brave and outspoken. While he can seem like the epitome of a "simple Southerner" and is not very "book smart," Jason is much more intelligent than others (and himself) give him credit for. He has shown an incredible capacity for logical thinking and problem solving, getting himself out of a variety of dangerous situations.

In the books he is turned into a werepanther and as thus he can switch from panther to human form; in the series his transformation apparently will never happen. Despite having fae blood, Jason is not of supernatural status as Maryann was able to influence him and only the supernaturals were immune to Maryann's influencing power.
