Sanbir Dutta is a guru on the HBO original series True Blood. Played by Indian-American actor Shishir Kurup, Sanbir makes his debut on the episode "Fire in the Hole" in the series' seventh season. Playing a recurring role through the same season, Sanbir is the proprietor of an ashram called the Institute for the Unchained Spirit in Los Angeles, California. A lover of Sarah Newlin, Sanbir met an untimely demise in the Season 7 episode "Karma". He appears once more, in one of Sarah's hallucinations, on the subsequent episode, "May Be the Last Time", in the series' seventh, and final, season.

Biography

Background

Sanbir Dutta was a self-styled guru and proprietor of the Institute for the Unchained Spirit, an ashram which primarily operated as a yoga studio. He was a practitioner of Buddhism and tantric sex.

Season 7

When Sarah Newlin went on the lam after the vampire revolt at the Burrell camp, she searched for a place where nobody would recognize her. She read about the ashram, and made her way to Los Angeles to join. Guru Dutta took Sarah, now calling herself Noomi, into his home and she quickly became his star student and lover. ("Fire in the Hole")

When the Yakuza tracked Sarah to Guru Dutta's establishment, he was ambushed by Hiroki and questioned about Sarah's whereabouts. Knowing that she was in his wine cellar, Sanbir admitted that he knew Sarah, but refused to tell Hiroki where she was. For this, he was decapitated by the Yakuza. ("Karma")

Sanbir later appeared as one of Sarah's hallucinations of her former lovers to taunt her for having cost him his life. ("May Be the Last Time")
