Sookie Stackhouse is a telepath who was born in Bon Temps, a small town in Louisiana. She works as a waitress for Sam Merlotte at his restaurant Merlotte's, and is romantically involved with the vampire Bill Compton.

[edit] Before Season 1

A young Sookie Stackhouse

She was born to Michelle and Corbett Stackhouse, and grew up in Bon Temps with her parents and brother Jason. At a young age she developed telepathy, a gift which frightened most, but fascinated some. When she was 8 years-old, both her parents died in a flash flood. After this, she and her brother Jason moved in with their gran and grandfather. Sookie lived with her grandparents and brother for many years very happily, although it is revealed that Sookie was once molested by her uncle Bartlett.

Since childhood, Sookie has been best friends with Tara Thornton, who has always been very protective of Sookie. In her teen years, Sookie found it difficult to make friends as she knew their deepest secrets due to her telepathic abilities. This prompted her to be forthcoming with people about her ability, which ultimately led to Sookie becoming somewhat of a social outcast. Because of her ability and her reputation, Sookie especially had trouble finding boys she was interested in, and the few dates she had never turned into anything serious since she could hear their often inappropriate thoughts. Over time she was able to control her telepathy, blocking out the thoughts of others, but it required so much concentration that she could never fully relax around others.

At some point Sookie got a job working as a waitress at Merlotte's, Sam Merlotte's restaurant and bar. It was here that she met Bill Compton, a 173-year-old local vampire with whom Sookie fell in love with. Because of his vampirism, Sookie could not read his mind and thus was comfortable to be around someone she could be surprised with.

[edit] Season 1

Sookie after her beating from the Rattrays
Sookie meets Bill Compton, the first vampire to visit Bon Temps since vampires 'came out of the coffin'. She is instantly drawn to Bill, as he is to her. After Bill is nearly killed by the Rattrays and saved by Sookie, the two quickly bond over their curiosity about each other. Bill quickly realizes that Sookie is more than human and Sookie cannot hear Bill's thoughts (due to his vampirism). The following night the Rattrays came for revenge on Sookie. Bill intervened, saving her life and incapacitating the Rattrays. Sookie was badly injured and near death, so Bill forced her to drink his blood. After she is healed she begins to have erotic dreams about Bill, a side effect of consuming his blood. ("Strange Love")

("The First Taste")

Sookie continues to talk to Bill and begins to help him find contractors to make the necessary repairs on Bill's house. On the night she brings the contractors' numbers to Bill's, she is confronted by three vampires, Malcolm, Liam and Diane. The vampires terrorize her and try to bite her until Bill states that 'Sookie is [his]'. After this attack Sookie is frightened and worries about her safety, finally deciding not to speak to Bill any more. ("Mine")

When she tells her gran about her decision to cut ties with Bill, her gran quickly points out that Sookie is not truly angry at Bill, but afraid because for the first time in Sookie's life she cannot tell what some one thinks of her. Sookie and Bill reconnect.("Escape from Dragon House")

Sookie finding her gran dead

Sam Merlotte, who had always had a romantic interest in Sookie takes advantage of her and Bill halts their relationship by asking Sookie out on a date. He takes her to the Descendants of the Glorious Dead meeting at the Bon Temps church, then out for pie, where he kisses her. After Sam yells at her for dating a vampire, Sookie takes a cab home, arriving home later than planned. She arrives home and sees blood on the kitchen floor. Sookie then turns on the light and sees her gran dead in the kitchen, the victim of a violent knife attack. ("Sparks Fly Out")

Grieving for her grandmother Sookie is unable to keep the thoughts of others out of her head, forcing her to hear how the whole town thinks that its her fault her gran died, and how they think Bill killed her. After the funeral and accepting her grans death Sookie sought comfort in Bill and the two had sex for the first time ("Cold Ground").

After their night together Sookie feels more able to cope with the loss of her grandmother knowing that Bill cares for her. However the rest of the town is not happy for Sookie, calling her a whore and fangbanger. She is also still angry and upset with her brother. While working at Merlottes that night Liam, Malcolm and Diane visit Sookie knowing Bill would sense her fear and come running to her rescue. They then proceed to leave with Bill and Sookie left at Merlottes, distraught and worried. After spending all night worrying about Bill Sookie's worst fear is realized after four bodies all unidentifiable are pulled out of Liam, Malcolm and Diane's new nest. ("Burning House of Love")

It is soon discovered that it was not Bill who was pulled out of the nest, but it was Neil, a local man Sookie saw at Fangtasia. Bill had gotten Sookie's warnings and slept in the ground to protect himself, the two are reunited in the graveyard that night and have sexual relations on top of Bills grave.

[edit] Season 2

Sookie has a fight with Bill after he discovers that she disobeyed him when she took Jessica to see her family. She is attacked by an unseen force and is badly injured. Sookie discovers that Eric has been keeping Lafayette prisoner in Fangtasia's basement and demands than Eric release him. Eric will only do so if she infiltrates the Fellowship of the Sun church in order to find Godric.

Bill, Sookie and Jessica travel to Dallas where they are later joined by Eric. Sookie is teamed together with Hugo, who is the lover of Isabel, Godric's second-in-command. They visit the church but are taken hostage in the basement by the Newlins, who later discover why Hugo and Sookie are there. It also emerges that Hugo is a spy for the Fellowship and Gabe, a trainer for the Light of the Day soldiers, knocks him out before attempting to rape Sookie. Fortunately, she is saved by Godric.

During the lock-in at the church, Eric offers himself up in exchange for Godric and Sookie's freedom. Steve Newlin is soon confronted by Jason and the rest of the Dallas vampires, who were responsible for killing his father. Godric manages to diffuse the situation and forgives Steve Newlin for his actions. Sookie, Bill, Eric and the rest of the Dallas vampires (including Godric) retreat to Godric's nest.

When a bomb is diffused at Godric's nest by Luke McDonald, in retaliation for the occurrence at the lock-in, Eric attempts to save Sookie by taking a bullet for her. The bullet hits him in the chest and Sookie is requested to extract the bullet with her mouth. She does so but soon learns that Eric had tricked her into taking some of his blood. Now he has access to her thoughts.

When Sookie confronts Maryann towards the end of the season she manages to conduct an electrical current with her hand but cannot understand how she did this. In the season finale, she is taken hostage by Maryann and her followers but once she regains control of herself she conjures up enough strength to knock over the sacrificial meat tree. Towards the end of the episode Bill proposes to her and after some hesitation she accepts. While she was making her decision, an unseen individual kidnaps Bill. She then comes to find the table a mess and Bill gone.
